Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember how much fun you had in Kindergarten? My students have only one wagon & it's not enough for a class of 24 students. They wait in line so long they give up on trying to ride in it. I have to rotate them on different days so that they all can have a little fun.

My little students are in kindergarten.

That means they come in at 4 & 5 years of age. They are energetic & cheerful kids that love to have fun! Our classroom can be found in Southern CA. We are a low income community where about 99% of our students qualify for a free lunch. There is much crime around the area & school grounds and activities are one of the few joys that these students can depend on. Our school's make-up is almost 100% Hispanic and students come from low income families. I dare to say that most of these students coming into my classroom have never even ridden in a wagon.

My Project

Our school budget allots money for books, writing materials, readers, and such. By the time they get to playground equipment, all we can buy are some jump ropes and possibly a couple of balls. In Kindergarten, we need to show the students how they can help one another by pulling their friends around and then having others pull them around on the little track we have. I especially like the idea of playing on the wagons because it shows teamwork. Students will learn to take turns, have some patience, and to pitch in & I won't have to break up fights because all 24 kids want to ride on our one wagon.

Many small children come from home with an egocentric point of view.

They haven't yet learned to play or share with others. They believe they are the "princess" or "prince" of their home. Using tricycles and wagons gives us the perfect opportunity to teach sharing, patience, and contribution all while having fun. Are these not some of the most important traits we would like all our students to attain? Why not learn these characteristics in Kindergarten while they are still young?
