Finding One Another: Using Jose Saramago And Allegory

My students need a classroom set of the novella "The Tale of the Unknown Island" to explore how use of allegory can create connections to and explore human nature.

My Students

Our county is very rural and the students struggle to see their lives and the world outside the scope of their small towns.

Our students victims of a collapsed textile industry and the wake of unemployment it left behind.

Though this story is common across North Carolina, our students have the added burden of being ridiculed by peers from neighboring, metropolitan counties. They are highly visual, highly emotional teenagers who crave connection with one another and the world but don't know how to take the first step.

My Project

"The Tale of the Unknown Island" is a powerful allegory of a man who goes to see the king. The man requests a boat to go in search of "The Unknown Island" but is told that there are no more unknown islands. Undaunted, the man secures his boat and a maid to maintain it and discovers that sometimes what we need most in life comes from what's inside us and the people we surround ourselves with.

I hope that my students will realize that they can find peace and fulfillment in themselves and their common humanity.

So many of the come from broken homes or from no home at all. They pretend to be so desperate to leave school during the day and then, when the bell rings, they linger because it's the only place they feel safe. If I can provide them with a positive and humane experience through literature then more of them will have a chance to live life fully.
