Connecting Home And School Reading With Technology

My Students

One of the most heartbreaking comments we hear as Reading Specialists is "There is no one at home to read to me or with me." We want all students to experience the joy of listening to stories read aloud and sharing the stories they have read.

A majority of our students do not enjoy reading or writing when they first come to our class because they have not felt successful in the area of literacy.

For a variety of reasons they have not made the same gains in the classroom as their peers and some are already feeling frustrated by first grade. We work hard in the first few weeks to build a relationship with our students that is positive. On a daily basis we acknowledge all the things they can do in reading and writing even if it's as simple as knowing the letters in their name or reading a few simple sight words. We praise them for the positive behaviors we observe in our class and usually within a few short weeks their attitudes improve and you can see they are gaining more confidence. Most of our students have shown responsibility by returning materials we send home so we feel confident they would take care of MP3 players.

My Project

We are requesting MP3 players for our struggling readers so the reading specialist can record books for students to listen to at home. We want our students to have maximum opportunities for hearing stories read aloud. Students who hear fluent reading modeled know how reading should sound. We will also use the MP3 players to record students reading books which they can share with parents at home and with classmates during school. This will give parents the opportunity to praise their child for successful reading.

In today's world we are competing with all kinds of technology.

Students are motivated by technology gadgets and by incorporating them into our reading program with struggling readers they will encourage a new mode for reaching our learning goals.
