This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I remember when I went to elementary school that science was the most boring subject. I remember a video (sometimes cool), a textbook, worksheets, and whole lot of reading boring texts. Science was may not have been a priority many schools by why not make it a priority now?

We are a public charter school in east Los Angeles.

Our students live in low income areas and 96% qualify for free and reduced lunch. We are attempting to beat the odds by providing high quality education on a scanty state budget. We were successful last year and our API proves it. However our budget is even smaller this year and we have even more challenges. Please help our students get to college! They are highly motivated, love learning and are the next generation of leaders!

My Project

Students love learning about outer space. However, the sun is a particularly difficult because it is dangerous to stare at the sun directly and, although we used pinhole cameras to try and view the sun, the images tended to be blurred or too small. This equipment allows me to use a large projection of the sun in order to point out the characteristics, such as sun spots and solar flares, of our sun. Through the sun, we can apply our knowledge of our sun to other stars in the universe.

It will increase equity in education (especially in science) across the state and provide equal opportunity for students in low income areas who may not have access to technology otherwise. Thank you so much for your help!
