My students need cooking supplies including bowls, spoons, strainers, bakeware, and appliances so they can get the cooking piece of their life skills curriculum started in their new kitchen.

My Students

A kitchen is being built for our life skills classroom, but supplies are not being provided! Cooking is an instrumental piece of the curriculum in helping my students with autism become more independent.

My students are in a segregated classroom in a public high school.

It is a special education classroom teaching life skills to students with autism between the ages of eighteen and twenty-two. The classroom is structured using visuals and written/picture instruction to help the students through their day with as little prompting from the teacher and staff as possible. Throughout the week the students complete numerous functional living tasks including, but not limited to: grocery shopping, cooking, doing laundry, washing dishes, going to work, transportation training, hygiene, working out at the gym, and banking. Our goal through our curriculum is to help these students become as independent as possible in their daily life.

My Project

The main goal for each and every one of my students is for them to become as independent as possible within both their homes and the community. Though many of them will never be able to live alone, the ability to cook a simple meal when one is hungry is a powerful tool. Having a kitchen stocked with usable kitchen tools and utensils is a vital part of teaching these students how to bake, boil, stir, whip, chop and saute many of their favorite meals. We have asked parents to send in their child's favorite meals. With these lists, step by step, picture/word, recipes will then be made and each student will learn how to make their favorite meals!

Imagine living your day to day life without the knowledge of how to complete menial daily life skills.

Life would be frustrating and difficult. What my goal is, is to give my students the power of independence. To teach them how to throw together their favorite meal or snack without needing prompts or supervision. My students have the desire to learn, now they just need the tools!
