My Students

Can you imagine a teacher giving you an assignment and knowing that no matter how hard you try, you will fail the assignment? That is how a lot of my students feel when they have to complete an assignment involving computer use. These are students who have no computer at home.

My students are bright cheerful fourth graders.

They live in the Appalachian Mountains in Eastern Kentucky. Many of my students live below poverty level. They come from homes where their father has lost his job in the coal field. My students have loving parents and grandparents, but many of them do not have the resources to provide a home with an Internet accessible computer. My students attend a school with approximately 350 students. 90% of these students are on free or reduced lunch.

My Project

Having an Internet accessible computer in my classroom will help all of my students become more technologically advanced. Being able to use a computer is a very important skill for my students. Technology is everywhere and I want all of my students to be able to take advantage of knowing how to use a computer.

Giving a nine-year-old child the chance to learn how to use a computer and access the Internet to do school projects and to enhance their basic math and reading skills will make a difference in their future.

Living in a mining town that doesn't offer a lot of job opportunity without a college education, all of my students need a chance to use a computer on a daily basis.
