The Last Song Literature Group

My students need 15 copies of The Last Song, by Nicholas Sparks for the purpose of a book club that will discuss social issues.

My Students

Every student should have the opportunity to read a book that introduces them to characters they become friends with and issues that they can relate to.

My students are enthusiastic and hard working 7th and 8th graders attending a public school in Brooklyn, New York.

They enjoy reading, but rarely reflect upon what they read. I feel as if they read simply to complete books due to academic requirements, but have not yet encountered books that cause them to connect to characters in a personal way. Being that these students attend a K-8 school and have never really had the opportunity to change schools and have the true middle school experience, it is necessary for my students to reflect upon what they read and examine not only character actions and feelings, but also their opinions on real life social issues so that they are ready for the challenges that they will face in high school and in all situations beyond their small school.

My Project

The Last Song, a book by Nicholas Sparks was recently released as a major motion picture. With celebrities that are popular among our youth starring as the main characters, many students saw the movie and are aware of the story, but have not taken the time to read the book. There are many social issues present in the book such as: divorce, various parenting styles, family relationships and structures, peer pressure, love and trust, acceptance, abusive dating relationships, friendship, coping with illness, and death. These issues are not explored in detail in the film, but through the book can be discussed more in depth. If granted the 15 copies of The Last Song, an after school literature group will be started. Students will learn to reflect upon what they read and decide what their views are on certain issues. They will learn to discuss and express what they feel with peers, listen to others' views, and be accepting and understanding of those with different and opposing views.

By supporting this project, you are supporting the growth of students who are preparing to transition to high school by providing a forum for raising awareness of social issues.

By providing us with 15 copies of The Last Song, you will be aiding our students in discovering what their views are on important issues as well as the opportunity to discuss a wonderful story with their peers.
