My Students

Walk a day in my shoes! My students think that they are the only minority in the world. I want to use the novel Number the Stars to give them a better understanding of what it really means to be an outcast in your own country. I feel that this novel opens children's eyes to the inequalities of the past and today.

My students live in poverty ridden neighborhoods.

Most have only one parent and tremendous responsibilities. Our school is an underachieving school that has limited in funds. I want to give them opportunities through the use of literature, opportunities that they may not otherwise have.

My Project

I am requesting 33 copies of Number the Stars by Lowis Lowry and the recorded CD of the same book to use in my fifth grade classroom. Once we have read the book, analyzed the history, and discussed the similarities and differences in today's society, I plan on taking them to the World War II museum to connect real world experiences with the text.

My students see the world in black and white.

I want them to understand that hate touches many races and families throughout history. I want them to connect the text to the modern world and possibly change their outlook forever.
