Fighting Prejudice Through Reading!

My students need a class set of "Devil's Arithmetic" to read for our first unit on fighting prejudice.

My Students

The students in my room know that their brains grow bigger as they read. In our next unit, we're not only growing our reading levels, we're growing our understanding of the world.

My students are 6th and 7th graders in a small, rural town in Mississippi.

They are hungry to grow their brains, their reading levels, and learn about the world, but they have limited access to books. Our theme for the year is "fighting prejudice" and we are going to start by reading about The Holocaust through the eyes of a young girl. The book, "Devil's Arithmetic" will not only challenge my student's to grow their reading levels, it will teach them about new places and cultures. Ultimately, it will teach them to fight prejudice in all its forms.

My Project

My students eyes light up when I put a book in their hand, but our school does not have class sets for me to share with them. This set of books would impact more than 60 students this year and hundreds in the years to come. It will not only help students to grow in their reading, but also in their understanding of the world around them.
