My Students

Pre-first grade is a stepping-stone between kindergarten and first grade for those that require extra support to master early literacy skills. A majority of our students are visual learners and would benefit greatly from digital representations like pictures to teach reading and writing.

I teach pre-first grade to high-need, low-income students in a small rural public school district in New York State.

My class includes a high number of special education, and low performing students. About 80% - 85% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of our kids cannot afford to purchase their class pictures so having a digital camera would help teach pictures in words and provide memories for our year-in-review project.

My Project

The students would benefit greatly from having a digital camera that they could use to take photographs to go along with their stories, and with creating picture books when learning to spell and write. This would help them be more successful in early literacy skills and foster their foundation, which will last a lifetime.

If students fall behind in the early years, especially in literacy, they will never be able to catch up.

Having advanced learning tools will help our kids succeed, and prepare them for life beyond the classroom.
