Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It is said that 'If you do not hope, you will not find what is beyond your hopes.' This is what I set out to teach my students; to hope. Their education can make their hopes and dreams come true. The students in my classroom come from all backgrounds, from English Learners to the average student.

Well over 200 students enter my classroom doors each day, most of whom have developed a very sad, deep seeded fear of mathematics.

The simple truth is mathematics, especially Algebra, is very difficult for students. It takes the right teacher and right materials for students to truly learn. In addition to the topic being seemingly impossible, intermediate students face obstacles every single day that affect them in and out of the classroom. These obstacles, such as dealing with death, social problems, divorce, homelessness, and parents losing jobs make daily lives difficult. It is hard for a teen to not dwell on these obstacles, it is especially hard to get past them and learn mathematics.

My Project

Games are a tool that can be used in the classroom to engage students. Games are fun and kids naturally gravitate towards them. These particular games I am requesting will allow students to practice basic math functions, while using tactile reasoning skills. The truth is, students cannot be successful in upper level math without these basic skills. These games are an excellent resource for the highest ability students, as well as students with special needs and English Learners. It allows students to work together and learn in a fun, exciting, and very educational way. The tessellation design books I am requesting allow students to create engaging and exciting pictures along with their math work. This simple addition of art makes kids more engaged and excited to do mathematics. Finally, I have requested math career posters. It is important to show students where they can go in life with math and college. This will help to boost their motivation and confidence. Confidence in themselves is everything in middle school.

You can make it possible to give them this confidence.

You can instill a love of mathematics in my students that will last a lifetime. You can make a difference in the lives of students for years to come. You can help step them into the right direction, a future in education.
