My Students

What is one of the greatest challenges facing a classroom of 4 year old children? If we can't get along, we can't be a family! Help my students learn to regulate their actions toward others and get along through a pretend play dollhouse.

We are a multicultural class of 20 children.

All of our students are 4 years old, and many will be turning 5 during the school year. The majority of our students qualify for free/reduced meals and live in low income areas of our town. Many of them lack the language and social skills needed to be successful in Kindergarten. Through our public preschool program, we hope to provide our children with the skills needed to help prepare them for Kindergarten.

My Project

The children in our program love to pretend in dramatic play situations. I would like to carry over this pretend play with the dollhouse and families. As students learn about families, they will be able to take on roles and play them out in different scenarios as well as practice problem solving. One of the most important things a child can gain from preschool is the ability to get along with peers and solve problems cooperatively. Through the pretend play with the dollhouse, students can play out scenarios and work through situations that might actually occur. This play activity also allows students to test out scenarios in a make-believe situation. It allows them the opportunity to play out what they think should happen in a way that they feel safe to do so.

When children can get along with others, they are able to be part of a productive classroom environment.

They can learn and feel safe. Their chances of success in school multiply when problem-solving skills emerge. Through pretend play, the students learn to work though problems and get along with one another. This needed social skill is one that will that will impact the students throughout their school experience. For many, it will also carry over into their home situations as well.
