My Students

Do you remember the last good book you read? Many of my students will they do not have a favorite book or even enjoy reading! They need high interest books to read and enjoy to develop a love of reading.

My students attend school in a low income neighborhood in Illinois.

They are mostly African American and come from single family homes. They do not come to school with an appreciation for books. They do not enjoy independent reading. The library needs books they can relate to and enjoy on their independent reading level. The students want books focusing on their culture, but the books need to be high quality books. Learning to love to read can change a student's life!

My Project

Books, books and more books! If you fund this project you are investing in books for a classroom library. The books I am requesting are high interest and high quality. These books can engage students during independent reading and they can help to instill a love of reading in many of my non readers! Having exposure to good literature can change their lives and attitude toward reading!

Many of my students come from homes where there are no books available to read.

Getting books into the hands of low income kids is crucial! The quality of the books is so important and the content is equally important. Many of the books on my list relate to the students' cultures and home lives! These books can open doors for the students!
