Outdoor Garden Grows Student Healthy Eating

My students need these 21 books to support the Literature in the Garden, Jr. Master Gardener, Health, Nutrition from the Garden & Wildlife Gardener Curriculum by 4_H.

My Students

The school's outdoor classroom grows many different vegetables but how do we get the students to eat those vegetables? The 4-H Master Gardener curriculum and these books, in the library, will support the curriculum that teaches healthy living and additional books for the Accelerated Reading program.

Located in a rural community, many of the students have no experience with gardening.

Over the past 2 years, the school has been developing an outdoor classroom. Currently the students spend time in the spring planting seed in the classroom and then transplanting into the garden. Last year a pond with waterfall and a butterfly garden were added. The area is fenced and plans are now being made to raise the money to build a classroom size gazebo. One of the teachers is a beekeeper and as the outdoor classroom expands a hive may be added. With the addition of the Jr. Master gardener curriculum, and the health sessions in the PE class, hopefully we will see an increase in healthy eating among our students and staff. With our overweight population, teaching our students how to eat healthy along with increasing their physical activity will lead to a healthier community.

My Project

These books will be used to support our students with additional Accelerated Reader books and support the Jr. Master Gardener curriculum. Six of the books are used to inspire learning through outdoor activities, creative expression and open exploration. The other books support the fun activities and interesting facts to help the students experience the joy of making things grow. Then the students will be motivated to eat the fruits of their labor in their study of "Health and Nutrition from the Garden." The imaginative curriculum teaches students that growing and eating nutritious fruits and vegetables is rewarding and fun.

Learning and participating in the outdoor classroom garden will help students learn how to start and care for plants.

Weeding the garden can help with physical exercise that is necessary for a healthy lifestyle. Our population is super sized and we need to educate our students as to portion size and healthy eating. With students growing vegetables, we can lead them to a healthy diet along with an active lifestyle. The books will provide curriculum support and reading material in the library.
