My Students

Imagine a classroom of students from very low income families, becoming the game changing scientists our country needs for a better future. That is what I see when my class has hands on experiences in science. They each observe, predict, test and share their outcomes with their "colleagues".

2nd Grade Reality Check: 15 of my 19 students had never eaten a fresh pear, peach or nectarine, which was recently provided to them by a healthy snack program.

They weren't even sure what a pear or nectarine was. I have taught in Title I schools for 25+ years, but this brought me to a new level of understanding about poverty limiting a child's experiences to a level I hadn't fully comprehended. These are bright, vibrant and motivated children who "gobble up" information as fast as they did those snacks! They deserve and desperately need high quality, intensive educational experiences. Science is the perfect vehicle for engaging my students in critical thinking, enriched vocabulary, and integrating comprehension, math and writing skills. Children are natural scientists, but they need guided inquiry and experiences to get the most out of that natural inclination.

My Project

The GEMS science kit "Matter" gives all my students hands on experiences exploring the 3 states of matter. These concepts are the building blocks of science. This study helps students revise misconceptions they have about every day experiences with liquids, solids & gases. As they work through the activities, their discoveries allow them to further investigate the outcomes, by comparing them with other students' work, and with their own previous perceptions. They acquire the scientific process skills as they are immersed in the original investigation, and in their creation of other experiments that they plan, varying different components, and using different set ups and controls. They also participate in a Science Convention and share their findings. They address our class or other classes as they present, as "Fellow Colleagues". If additional questions are raised, they plan follow up activities to address those issues! This allows students to learn SO much more than science!

While they are busy observing, predicting, testing and sharing their findings, their minds are actively absorbing a way to organize their thinking and utilize critical thinking and comprehension skills.

Children from poverty often have chaotic life issues to try to deal with. Education is the key to their success. Science is packed with skills and processes that help bring them a deeper understanding of academic skills and thinking. This is a critical area for children experiencing poverty
