The Owl Pellets Came From Where!?!?

My students need 75 Owl Pellets in order to be introduced with comparative skeletal anatomy, concepts of natural history, ecology, and predator/prey relationships.

My Students

Spark our interest! Nothing sparks the interest of Middle School Students like regurgitated animal remains! My one major desire in education is to excite my students with education, and Owl Pellets, are not an everyday occurrence that learners see in our Valley.

The learners are young, excited, and eager to learn about anything and everything.

Since we are a project-based school, we need to have tools that give us that ability; I believe the Owl Pellets to be one such tool. It gets the students kinesthetically moving and excited about what they are learning. Not many learners can say that they have opened an Owl Pellet, taken the bones, and recreated the bones in hopes of studying the food web of Owls. It is an interesting topic that deserves no less!

My Project

Each learner will have the opportunity to investigate an owl pellet and discover their own education through multiple means. They can find their own data, but they also make conclusions within small groups and the class as a whole. These owl pellets will truly transform the students' learning and give them memories for years to come. Our learners will have the opportunity to study Owl Pellets and the neat science that encompasses the unit. The learners get the opportunity to study the food web, predator/prey relationships, anatomy, investigation, data collection, and following the scientific method to solve the storyline.

Giving learners the opportunity is more than half of the battle in education; once they have that opportunity, they will run with the project and make it their own...make it meaningful to them.

It is because of lessons like these that get students to truly fall in love with subjects like science.
