Enticing Books for Reluctant Readers

My students need 31 high interest fiction and nonfiction books that entice them to read with titles from "A Street Through Time: A 12,000 Year Walk Through History" to "Albert Einstein: A Photographic Story of a Life".

My Students

The only way to get better at reading is to read. Most of my special education students are struggling readers. They need age-appropriate books that are written at a lower reading level.

The students I teach receive special education services.

They are in the general education classroom most of the day. It's different for each student, but most of them come to the special education classroom for reading instruction. Many of my students come to me reporting that they don't like reading because it's hard and boring. Many times, this is because they try to read books at their "frustration" level. That's why I am always working on collecting a hi-lo classroom library: books that are of high-interest to middle school students but are written at a lower reading level.

My Project

I've requested fiction and nonfiction books that I know my students will love. Most of the fiction books are from the Orca Sounding series, which my kids can't get enough of. These books are meant for teenagers, but are written at the 2.0 to 4.5 grade level. The covers are cool, so nobody will be embarrassed carrying these books around. The nonfiction books are by DK publishing, another favorite. The richly illustrated texts give students experience with captions, tables, and graphs. I chose books that fit in with the Science and Social Studies curriculum.
