Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember not understanding why you had to study a particular subject? Or what it was like not being interested in a subject and being forced to take it? I have developed a middle school science program that will help students overcome those issues.

My students are 7th and 8th grade students.

They are mostly from low income families, and for many English is not their first language. They have tremendous ambition and want to learn. They attend a public school, which has struggled recently to raise student interests towards academics. To increase student interest in science, I have recently developed a very unique middle school science program called The V. Science Initiative. I have arranged to bring science professionals to the campus on a regular basis to speak about what they do, why it is important, and to discuss the role science will play in out future. Science professionals will visit the school every other month.

My Project

I have also organized a group of scientists scattered across the globe to interact with our students over the internet. All together, these interactions will present my students will a diverse picture of what science professionals do, why it is important, and how it will affect our futures. To add to this program, I have decided that one of my classes will read a science-themed novel, and I have chosen Ana's Story: A Journey of Hope. This book focuses on the life of a young woman from Latin America Infected with HIV/AIDS at birth. Ana loses both parents to the disease. After suffering abuse at relatives' homes, she finds a caring center for those living with HIV/AIDS, where she falls in love and eventually gets pregnant. Her child is born without the virus, and at the story's close, Ana has found a peaceful home where she can plan a new life for herself and her baby.

This book will show my students that science extends well beyond the laboratory and classroom.

Science affects all people. And with the advancement of scientific discoveries at such a dramatic pace, science will have unknown influences on our future. This book will show my students how these influences can affect anyone and everyone.
