Is That A Plant Or An Animal?

My students need living sea anemones, starfish, urchins, crabs, snails and nudibranchs to care for and observe during our study of marine invertebrate animals in zoology.

My Students

The main obstacle in trying to teach my zoology students about marine invertebrates is the fact that we live in the middle of the continental United States. Only a few of my students have ever been to the ocean. Students often ask, “Is that a plant or an animal?”

My zoology students are naturally inquisitive about the animals in my classroom.

Daily discussions in my classroom with juniors and seniors spark their curiosity about how animals eat, survive, and reproduce. I have three snakes, one bearded dragon lizard, a newt and two leopard geckos, plus a 50 gallon river tank with frogs, snails, and 4 crayfish. Students are allowed to care for and hold the snakes, lizards and geckos during the day. The money for maintaining the tanks including filters, food and replacement water comes from my own pocket. Our school does not provide funding for maintaining the animals. Last year, I set up a 55 gallon marine aquarium with live rock and a few crabs, two anemones, one sea urchin and one brittle star. Students sign up for weekly care of the aquarium including feeding the animals and testing the water.

My Project

My students are inquisitive and excited about learning zoology. Our textbook is a college level text and the primary resource provided by the school. The textbook is difficult for high school students to comprehend. Additionally, the majority of zoology students have little to no experience with several of the invertebrate and vertebrate animals in our textbook. Providing my class with sea anemones, starfish, snails, nudibranchs and sea urchins to observe and study will enhance what students read about in class. Students are naturally curious about animals and I believe nothing can take the place of classroom inquiry, observations and direct contact with living organisms.

I feel that allowing students to observe and care for live marine invertebrates first hand will give them more information and an appreciation of the animal’s place in their natural environment.

Your donations will make my dream of giving my students experiences with living marine animals a reality. Without your help this idea may never come to pass.
