My Students

How cool would it be for my students to be able to decorate a life sized head? This is an excellent project for students to express themselves through the art of collage.

We are a "Special Education" school who needs your help.

The students in my school are severely disabled. They suffer from mild cases of cognitive deficits to cerebral palsy, severe intellectual deficits (formerly known as "mental retardation") and many other multiple disabilities. Our students vary from non-functioning, non-verbal, to limited physical abilities, full physical functioning young adults and low cognitive functioning adults. Due to these varied disabilities, we as teachers need to come up with mixed strategies and techniques to present the subject matter for our students' diverse learning needs.

My Project

We can use these model head kits to create a portrait of themselves. By using collage, they can decorate these model heads and tell us how they feel. Artistic expression is sometimes the only cue we have into their world. Using a model head can not only be therapeutic but can also help us make the connection to them that our ideas come from our heads.

This project would be something tangible and unique to each student.

It is important that I teach my students that they are creative, unique and beautiful. Unique is a positive word and not a negative one. More people in the world should strive to be unique!
