This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like when the only resource you had to learn from was an outdated text book???? Well I want my students to have the opportunity to go beyond the text book and learn from current and updated resources about the events occurring around them affecting the world.

I currently work in a public school located in a very low income society.

The students in the school are relatively neighborhood kids whose parents are barely making ends meet. Despite their living conditions, these students want to learn and look forward to coming to school. If given the right resources and provided the right opportunities, these children will achieve great things.

My Project

As a science teacher, I try to make learning fun. I try to relate real world events with textbook knowledge. I have the students do a current events piece weekly in order to reassure that they are connecting what they learned in the classroom with what is going on in the world, specifically in New Orleans and in Haiti (which is where some of my students are from) etc. and in such medical cases as swine flu, which was a huge topic discussed in our schools. I feel with the Science Weekly Reader, my students will have an upper hand in learning about these topic and be able to create projects, perfect their reading skills, and work on public speaking all from this one source.

The Weekly Reader will inspire my students and allow them to be aware of their surroundings.

It will allow them to put down the video games, turn off the TV and READ and EXPLORE. Science is an adventure filled with opportunity and I hope to be able to provide that for my students.
