Supporting Literacy Success

My students need a listening center in the classroom to build reading fluency and English language skills.

My Students

Storytelling defines us! One of my students' favorite activities in the classroom is to listen to a story being read/spoken aloud. Without a listening center, my students are missing opportunities to read along with stories, to have language modeled, and to build reading fluency.

I feel incredibly fortunate as a teacher to serve such a diverse group of students.

Many of my students are learning the English language. This can make Language Arts a challenge! The school that I teach at is a Title 1 school. Over 70% of the students are on Free/Reduced Lunch. My hope is to meet the varying needs of all of my students.

My Project

With a well run listening center, my students will be able to have multiple exposures to both grade level text and text at their reading level. This will greatly increase their reading fluency and comprehension. Not to mention, develop a love of literature! A few years ago, I had a listening center in my classroom that I used as a work station while I met with guided reading groups. It was a favorite among the students! I even began to record myself reading our favorite classroom books on tape so they could enjoy a wider selection while listening. When I moved states, I realized that the school I was teaching at greatly lacked resources and technology. My students would love to have a listening center as part of our literature program. Since many of my students are English Language Learners, listening to fluent English modeled through favorite stories would greatly improve their own language acquisition skills and reading fluency.

This project is so important to me as a teacher.

I have seen how effective a properly ran listening center can have on students with their reading skills and confidence. Donations to this request will ensure that my students have multiple experiences with books and spoken language. It will greatly add to the progress and success of my students. Most importantly, this will foster a love of reading within my students, which will motivate and inspire them.
