My Students

Have you ever read a text book and thought, "What a drag." Well that is the challenge facing my students who want to learn about California History but have a hard time understanding the book.

I am the proud teacher of 30 amazing fourth graders with extremely diverse backgrounds.

They come from every corner of the globe and speak many different languages. We are an urban school with many students being English Language Learners and 50% free and reduced lunch.

My Project

My students are eager learners who would love to learn about our beautiful state, but many of them do not have the comprehension skills to understand the text book. My goal is to be able to have them learn about our state through literature instead of a boring old text book. The key to their learning is to have them read books that are at their just right reading level and have them understand the concepts.

It is very difficult for a child to join a classroom discussion if they do not understand what the topic of conversation is.

I am hoping that through leveled literacy books, my students will be able to not only understand the topics related to California History, but be a vital part of our classroom conversation. These books will make an infinite difference in the lives of these struggling learners.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
