My Students

Do you remember your first day in middle school? Wouldn't it have been great to know you had a mentor assigned to you to make sure you adjusted quickly? We have 40 leaders that are selected to help our new students get acclimated to our school. We need a way to get info out to our mentors quickly.

Our school has a diverse population of students and the number of free/reduce lunches has risen to almost 70% this year.

The school district as a whole has many affluent families, but due to our location our families are struggling. One way we are building community is through a student-to-student mentoring program called W.E.B. (Where Everybody Belongs). Our WEB leaders are called upon to communicate behavioral expectations to the students. They are the first people that many parents see when they enter the school. They also meet every other week with 12-15 students to develop a sense of belonging at school. It is a huge responsibility, but they gain confidence each time.

My Project

My students need an efficient way to get information, a 45 pocket horizontal literature file, so that they can communicate with the groups they mentor. The mentors are learning to take on leadership roles and also learning how to take responsibility in a larger organization. All of these skills will be great assets in their future. However, these students volunteer their time so there is not a consistent time to meet and get information to them. A mailbox system would help the leaders to get information readily before or after other classes. The mailboxes would allow us to give them information about a specific student in their group. Or it would give them a place to get the latest information on what is happening at school so that they can share it with their group members. We believe that this system would allow us to establish a system to continue building community in our school.

By funding this project, you would directly impact 40 students in developing their leadership skills.

You would also indirectly impact the other 400 students in the school as the leaders influence their school climate. Because this furniture is sturdy it would be a one-time purchase and would enhance the program over many years. Anyone that would choose to fund this project would be giving future leaders a tool to increase their impact on their peers.
