Them Bones

My students need a to scale human skeleton in order to be able to recognize relative size and placement of all the bones in the human body.

My Students

Bones? I know they are in there, but I don't understand how they look, how big they are, and how they connect to one another.

The students at my school choose to attend a free public school that was built on a peanut field in North Carolina.

This school serves a population that is under resourced; yet the parents and students value their education so much that they attend school from 8-5, some busing from over an hour away. Our school has a mission to close the achievement gap and provide all students of diverse backgrounds the ability to succeed at college and change their worlds. Students here value bravery, self awareness, and urgency that they show throughout their 40+ hour weeks!

My Project

My 7th graders have a goal to understand how science relates to their everyday lives. By being able to see their bones in something more than a picture, will help them to really grasp the concept and make it come to life! The skeleton will allow us to actively demonstrate how bones connect to one another, and see what size they will actually be. We spend almost half our year on the human body and genetics, so the skeleton will support numerous activities tied to songs they learn about bones, importance of bone health, and quizzes on location of certain key parts. We can later build on the bones as we talk about muscles and positions of organs to give the students something tangible to look at.

By providing my 7th graders the chance to see what their body truly looks like at the foundation, will help them be able to connect the science of the human body to their lives.

Science is sometimes believing in what you are told, but with the full size human skeleton my students don't have to just trust anymore. It will be one more certainty in the somewhat uncertain (we all remember middle school!) lives of my 7th graders.
