Have you ever gone to a foreign country not knowing a word of their language? Have you ever experienced culture shock? How did you feel? Imagine always being in a state of constant anxiety and uncertainty. Our students operate daily under this state.
I teach in a district 75 school in NYC.
Our students all fall on the autism spectrum, which means, that they have communication, social and interaction deficits. They also have deficits that include but are not limited to sensory integration, visual and auditory processing challenges, and tactile, hands and bilateral coordination issues as well.
My Project
The resources I am requesting include materials that are considered calmers and organizers for the out of sync child. I am also requesting manipulatives and sensory toys to create a sensory center where the child can go and engage and interact with the materials that will help calm him/her down and allow him/her to participate better in the classroom learning experience.
The sensory station will serve as an area in the classroom where the child can go daily as part of the daily routine and also when the child is feeling anxious and stressed.
The difference that you will be making through your donation is enabling the child to have better self management skills, more control of his environment, better concentration and focus and better problem solving skills. You will be giving the child the gift of more independence to exercise in his/her life.
