My Students

Many people tell me, "I really hated history in school but I really like it now." I hate textbooks and so do most of my students. Unfortunately, because of school budgets and copyright laws, most teachers are forced to rely on them more than they would like. I would like to change that.

My students are college bound and some of the hardest working students in our school.

Our school is a diverse urban public school with an International Baccalaureate program. This means that the kids are preparing for a series of exams that could earn them college credit. There are many challenges to preparing kids in an urban public school for these exams. One of the biggest challenges is a lack of resources. My students are expected to prepare for a test using a single text book with minimal supplementation while their counterparts in private schools will have read a variety of complete works by major historians. This means that they are less engaged, less challenged, and less prepared for their exams. This results in poor scores, which impacts their opportunities. In addition, lack of success on the exam demotivates future classes of students who need successful role models in their peer group. These are good kids who want a challenge but they need more support to be successful.

My Project

For those who remember the Nixon years, or even for those who don't, Henry Kissinger is a controversial figure. That said, his book, Diplomacy, is among the best out there for anyone trying to understand the history of foreign relations. This book is engaging and absorbing and will give my students access to a major foreign policy maker of the Cold War. Whether or not you liked him, you will like Kissinger's book, and I believe, so will my students.

People often like to support classroom libraries for cute little kids.

We are often less likely to think of high school seniors needing access to books. Unfortunately, books are very expensive. These kids are being asked to do college work using one book while college kids taking a similar course regularly use 6 or 7 different texts. If they are going to be successful at the task put before them, my kids need access to similar resources. Your donation will give them access.
