My Students

Do you recognize the image above? It’s from the original 1922 film Nosferatu, the first screen adaptation of Dracula. When I was a kid, it’s one of the things that inspired me to read the book, and it still gives me the shivers.

Visual imagery gets kids interested in things they normally would never bother with, including reading.

And today’s kids are more visual than ever. But instead of fighting this trend, I want to channel it because my mission is to get kids to not only read books but to love literature, and that’s why I incorporate visual learning into my curriculum. But I teach in an inner city school that doesn’t see a lot of funding. Much of our building hasn’t been updated since it was built in 1937. Hard to believe? Well, let’s just say whenever it rains, I need a bucket to catch the dripping water. As for technology, my classroom has an old tube T.V., a pull-down screen that’s falling apart, and my laptop. So when my students want to do a digital presentation, I have to compete with 15 other teachers in my department for the one projector we all share. That’s right. 15 teachers: 1 projector. The good news is that when my kids do get an opportunity to use technology, the results are amazing.

My Project

I teach various English classes, the most unique of which is a course called Gothic Studies, an advanced study of classics like Dracula, Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the works of Poe, and other books from the horror genre that educators often ignore but teenagers adore. But the only thing scarier than the books is our school’s lack of resources. In my class, we study the history and culture that produced the stories, compare them to classic and modern film versions, analyze psychological issues and do multimedia presentations. In fact, each student is required to create a PowerPoint presentation on a subtopic of their choosing. And though the written word is always the main focus, I use a large amount of historical texts, primary sources, and other visuals that are not easily reproducible on paper. Most of this material is, however, readily found on the internet and it is infinitely easier to present it using a projector that can interface with my laptop.

This kind of visual/project-based learning really grabs kids’ attention and adds a dimension to learning beyond what the page can provide.

The books that I teach are classics, and they have influenced print, video, film, drama, poetry, art, and music, and it is difficult to convey all of this with just chalk and a board. Please help me buy a projector to make learning fun. It’s such a simple thing, but it makes a big difference.
