Bring the Dark Continent to Light!

My students need a class set of the book "King Leopold's Ghost" to supplement their studies of Imperialism.

My Students

Why do they call it "The Dark Continent"? As an educator, I hear this question asked over and over again about Africa. Most students lack knowledge of Africa and of the relationship European Imperialism played in the balance of power between nations today.

My students attend a Title One school within commutable distance of a major metro area in Georgia.

Most are Honors students of African descent and are intent upon taking the AP World History exam. This being the case, a book like this is doubly important. Not only does it prepare students for the exam, but it answers many questions about the state of African affairs today for students who know precious little about that part of the world. My students would find such knowledge to be a boon to their self concept.

My Project

This book explores the dark side of colonialism with its accompanying aspects of greed, Social Darwinism, and genocide. The connection between a legacy of misrule and the fomentation of ethnic strife and genocide (Rwanda, Burundi...) that haunts parts of Africa today is clearly made. It is a true piece of scholarly work that takes the reader along for the ride, allowing them to understand aspects of the investigative work of a historian. By reading this book, students will learn how to think historically and to hypothesize reasons for other social ills in the world today. It will allow them to step outside their own point of view and to understand that people make the choices they do predicated upon their historical experiences. Students will be able to participate more fully in the class and as citizens in activities that require them to stretch themselves cognitively by positing solutions to the problems that are facing us today.

The Social Studies discipline has a vitally important purpose in our world.

The Social Studies play a part in the formation of productive citizens who can contribute to this world we live in by making it a better place. In order to do this, our children need an awareness of the ills and their causes so they may have an opportunity to fix them. A scholarly work such as this does much to expose them to the world today. Additionally, it instructs students on how scholarly research is conducted.
