Supporting History through ELA: Latin American Revolutions

My students need 40 copies of "In the Time of the Butterflies" by Julia Alvarez to support a Humanities unit on Revolutions of the late 19th and 20th centuries.

My Students

Do you find historical events more compelling when related by a great storyteller? This year, I want my students to feel--rather than simply understand--how an ordinary person comes to revolt against political and social oppression.

I teach at a school in Brooklyn attended by mostly Caribbean students.

Many of them are immigrants themselves, their families newly arrived from Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Guyana, St. Lucia, or Barbados. We are many times charged not just with providing a quality high school education, but with bringing reading and language levels up to par so that these students can compete in today's competitive college application pool and information-driven job market. To graduate, they must also pass rigorous state exams. The history exam requires them to write extensive essays on a broad range of complex topics. The history teacher and I, an English teacher, are therefore working together to improve student writing and deepen their understanding of global historical content.

My Project

To support students' understanding of global history and their writing ability, I have spent the summer researching novels that not only focus on revolutionary themes but are also ones to which my students can relate. I was thrilled to come across Julia Alvarez's 'In the Time of the Butterflies', an historical novel that documents underground revolutionary efforts during the Trujillo dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. Unlike many historical novels written for young adults, Alvarez's piece doesn't merely touch on the history. Political strife is woven inextricably into the personal development of four sisters, modeled after the Mirabal sisters who were murdered by Trujillo for their revolutionary involvement.

Through reading this book and discussing the decisions its characters make, my students will develop a profound understanding of why people choose to risk their lives for a greater political end.

They will also understand relationships between gender and political power. The novel provides ample opportunities for discussing and writing about literary technique, irony, choices, culture, and, last but not least, history.
