Don't Be So Dramatic! (Well, Maybe Just A Little...)

My students need costumes, a crib, bedding set and dolls for our "Dramatic Play" center!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Kindergrtners love to explore their identity and their impact on others by wearing costumes. The costumes in my class are dingy old thrift store clothes that have seen much better days. My children deserve fresh new dress up clothes that will inspire them and that they will respect.

My Kindergarten students are a racially mixed group of 5 & 6 year old special education students, regular education students, and English Language Learners.

This diverse population of children provides the challenge for me every school year to bring children together from diverse backgrounds as a family, to help them respect each others' differences, to explore and find commonality, and to learn to love school.

My Project

My students need costumes, a crib, bedding set and dolls for our "Dramatic Play" center! Perhaps you have had to dine every evening with a little superhero in costume...or maybe you've seen a young 5 year old tagging along behind dad at the grocery store wearing wings! This may be cute, but 'Dramatic Play' also has valid benefits to young children's development. Children use Dramatic Play to get relief from social tension by reenacting trauma like death or divorce. They use it to feel powerful by trying on powerful roles like mom or dad or teacher. They build empathy by trying other roles, and develop language and confidence by speaking their perspective. They begin to understand symbols by pretending a doll is a baby, and a slip of paper is money, and they sort out fantasy from reality by switching back and forth from 'the real world' to 'pretend.' You can help my students develop all of these things through their natural urge to play with these multicultural and career outfits.

Your donation will thrill my students this year, and students for years to come, as the costumes and masks I have ordered are durable and washable.

Play is such a huge part of childhood development, and these fresh and clean costumes will be used daily!
