The Write Stuff From the Start

My students need primary pencils, primary writing journals and paper and primary crayons.

My Students

Great writing is like painting a picture with words and it all starts with the single stroke of a pencil on paper. I would like my students to have the chance to create masterpieces; with the "Write Stuff from the Start" they can!

I teach kindergarten in an Illinois Public Charter School.

The school is in a high-need community. Although I request primary pencils and crayons on the supply list, the parents usually purchase the standard sizes of these items because they are cheaper. My students are just beginning to learn to write and really need developmentally appropriate writing supplies.

My Project

My Project: I am asking for writing supplies. We are in need of primary pencils, primary writing journals and primary crayons. I purchased some pencils and crayons to begin the year because it breaks my heart to watch as the children try to grip the standard pencils and crayons correctly. My students are constantly snapping standard pencils/crayons in half as they either hold on too tight or push too hard to help steady the pencil/crayon or they do not hold the pencil/crayon firm enough and fail to make a solid line. Forming their little fingers around a standard pencil is a challenge for all of the students but it is especially difficult for those with fine motor problems or low muscle tone. I am also asking for primary writing journals and writing paper. Writing journals and paper have a place for non-writers and writers to draw and guidelines to aid in the writing process. The journals we are using now are actually wide ruled theme books; primary journals are also too costly.

With your generosity, my students will be able to learn to print/write properly from the start.

Appropriate writing materials with space for drawing and pencils and crayons will inspire my beginner writers to become more expressive and creative. The children will be able to write without the usual fatigue associated with improper pencil/crayon manipulation. In addition, think of the wonderful thank you letters the children will be able to write to you; our donors.
