My Students

Having Joyce Sidman as a writer in residence will reveal poetry in a new way for students. During this special week-long session Ms. Sidman will take the students through the writing process and guide them as they write their own poetic masterpieces.

As the "humanities" teacher, I work with 31 students in the morning and 32 students in the afternoon on reading, writing and social studies.

Many of Ms. Sidman's books tie in Life Science with poetry. Her work shows the importance of connections between humanities and inquiry. Our school is in "moderate poverty" and has recently been classified as a Title 1 school. These kids deserve a special experience from a real author.

My Project

Funding this project would mean that 63 students would get to learn how real authors write. Joyce Sidman will share how she became an author. Through carefully planned lessons she'll share her passion for poetry with the students and help them create their own poems. At the end of the week, Joyce Sidman will host a community event to share the week's work with the students' families.

Having an authentic experience from a Minnesota author will be a memory students carry with them throughout their lives.

I can't wait to see how inspired by poetry they become after spending a week with Joyce Sidman!
