Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is the second year the school has offered Earth Science. The challenge is to teach the course with limited resources and no textbooks.

I have taught in East Harlem the last 7 years and have made the move to Brooklyn.

I have never taught Earth Science. The school I moved to has no resources to teach Earth Science. They began offering the course to give their students more options in courses, as well as to push them to achieve higher. Students need to know the impact humans have on our planet which goes beyond their understanding of humans' relationships to other living organisms. Our students are doing well in their Living Environment/Biology course. They understand their relationship to other living organisms on our planet. However, they are not learning their physical relationships to Earth itself such as weather and climate.

My Project

When I researched the amount it would cost to get a class set of textbooks, and a personal copy of a Earth Science review book for the students - I had sticker shock. Too much to post on DonorsChoose.org. I need to start somewhere, so I might as well start with a few textbooks and make copies until I can get what I really need. I see teachers writing curriculum for their courses all the time. There are textbooks out there with all the work of writing a curriculum done for them. Only problem is the money. Not all schools have the money or are willing to pay for them, hence the problem. Thanks to donors like you, there are ways to offer students around the country equal opportunity to an education.

I'm glad to hear that my new school has decided to offer Earth Science.

My old school did not think it was important. Well it is! Many students are graduating with little to no education about our own planet. Earth Science is an opportunity to address this problem. Our students need to be given the right information about our planet, not just information from the Internet, but from books!
