My Students

With budget cuts becoming more and more of a reality in my state, my students are facing less and less in our classrooms.

My students are 7th Graders in North Carolina.

We have a completely diverse population, and range from extremely high ability levels to extremely low ability levels. A lot of them come from single parent families, and therefore, they might not always get the support that they need at home.

My Project

We are desperately trying to incorporate Literacy in every subject area. Science is one of the more difficult areas due to the many facts that are involved. Since I have students with varying ability levels, I would like to do a group based book study. I want them to be able to read something that was based on a true story, so they know that it did happen, and have it be interesting to them. Most have not had a chance to really connect with a book, they do not like to read. I am wanting to try and engage them this year with a book that will go along with our weather unit that we cover the last 9 weeks of school. I am hoping that they might be able to connect with a character in the story and finally see what it is like to be totally engaged in a book and want to know what happens next in the story.

This project would help my student's Literacy skills.

By developing stronger reading skills, our future students have a better chance of being successful throughout their school career and beyond. And this will not just help this years students, but every group I have from now on. Please help me, help my students, to become more avid readers!
