My Students

Smoking in the science room? What? With nearly one-third of adolescents reporting cigarette use, education concerning the health implications of the behavior is imperative to its prevention. I would like to expose students in my school to the dangers of cigarette smoking to their bodies.

I teach in a very small, rural high school where we house preschool through seniors in one building.

By teaching all of the high school students, grades 9-12, I get to know each student and his/her family personally. My upperclassmen are great role models for the younger students. It is my students that the elementary and middle school students see on the basketball court and football field; it is my students that the elementary and middle school students see in the library reading; it is my students that the elementary and middle school students see making good (or bad) choices about drugs and alcohol. This is why I would like my junior and senior anatomy & physiology students to be well educated about the dangers of smoking.

My Project

With the "Effects of Smoking Kit", the students will see first-hand the amount of tar produced by a single cigarette that could end up inside the lungs. We will then be able to calculate the amount of tar collected over a lifetime of smoking and the reduction of the air capacity. The "Simulated Smoker's Lungs Demo" Kit will allow the students to observe this tar buildup on a pair of inflatable pig lungs and compare these to a healthy pair of lungs. The lungs also contain a simulated tumor to further illustrate the damage done as a result of smoking. These activities will lead to a discussion about the financial consequences of smoking and make comparisons of the money spent on cigarettes versus the amount that could be spent on other things such as DVDs, video games, or cars. As an additional activity, I will have my students make a presentation to the fifth grade class to educate these younger kids about the consequences of smoking to assist in their ability to resist peer pressure.

Knowing about smoking's effects through visual and hands-on activities will allow the students to make informed decisions about this drug.

It will also give high school students an opportunity to influence the future teenagers in their own opinions and decision-making. Hopefully this Know Smoking Allowed program will lead to a no-smoking attitude amongst our students.
