Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The obstacle my students are facing is that they do not have a firm foundation in phonics. As a result my students reading, spelling, and writing performance is not where I believe it could be.

I am a second grade teacher at an inner city charter school that services a population made up of 98% African American.

The needs of our school and students are very high. Many of my students receive free or reduced lunch. In my own classroom I have 20 eager and energetic learners. Their range of literacy abilities are from Pre-K to late third grade. They are so full of potential and are absolutely amazing.

My Project

My solution is to create and provide more phonics based activities, centers, and opportunities to practice. What we need in order to accomplish our goal of improving our phonics skills are some basic supplies and materials. I truly believe that reading, spelling, and writing skills will improve in my classroom if we are able to get some of these materials to make it interactive, fun and hands-on.

It is instrumental that my students have a firm foundation in phonics and that's why this project is very meaningful to us.

I want my students to not only learn what they need to but have fun doing it while learning to be more independent learners. I want my students to be driven to explore what they don't yet fully know and therefore work in these centers. Inevitably I want them to be self motivated learners.
