Calling All Fetal Pigs!

My students need fetal pigs and the lab equipment to experience a real dissection lab like their counterparts at suburban schools.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our is school of high need. A lot of our kids are at risk and if they are not held to collegiate standards, then they may meander onto the path that now stereotypes them. I want the best for my students and I want to establish a standard of rigor that will become the norm and not the exception.

When I first moved to Charlotte and told my landlord where I was teaching his reaction was "Oh **** I wouldn't wish that fate on anyone." This was the kind of school I wanted to be in.

My students are below grade level, constantly pushed through the system, and are expected to be low-achieving. Yet I know that my students are capable of being college bound if they have the right people supporting and advocating for them. I'm teaching an "honors" anatomy and physiology course. Although most of my students may not be considered the honors type, I want to push them to become honors students. I cannot do this without the proper resources. I can change the mindsets of other teachers and the students themselves, but if my students are not receiving the same course load as students in highly funded schools, then they will still be academically behind their peers.

My Project

Dissection labs are crucial for students to gain a better understanding of anatomy and physiology. This lab will take a full instructional week and will be used to support material on the digestive system and reproductive system. Students retain 80% of what they practice and experience, while only 20% of what they see and hear. For my students to be competitive college applicants they need courses that are hands on and practice focused. A virtual lab will not be good enough for my students. They need to get down and dirty with the material in order to challenge themselves and their peers to think of themselves as scientific scholars.

Introducing dissection to my students will also foster student interest in the biological sciences and the professions that lie within them.

Piggybacking on this lab will be an assignment where they will write a report on the real world applicability of dissection and learning to identify the different types of organs. Students need to discover the opportunities that lie in STEM careers so they can develop a college bound mindset.
