Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 10th graders are crowding around a laptop computer trying to see their version of a scene from Thornton Wilder's "Our Town." Except for a couple of boys who are right in front, no one else can quite see the Flip camera creations (thanks DonorsChoose!) that are being run. Later in the year, my students struggle to clearly hear and see "Othello" on an ancient TV/VCR set I've wheeled into the room.

These are only two examples of how an LCD projector would improve the lives of my students, most of whom qualify for Federal lunch programs, and who have come to our New York urban art and design-centered high school to express their creative talents.

As young vibrant teenagers in the 21st century, they have come to expect a high level of technological presence and digital fluency in their classrooms.

My Project

Yet, because of a lack of resources and funding, it is difficult for them to experience the work they've produced or exemplars of similar efforts. As a class, we will also be able to tirelessly search the Internet and project materials to amplify their readings. When we read a text, such as Marquez's "Chronicle of a Death Foretold," we'll be able to access and project to the class maps of Colombia, reader groups discussing the book, and iChat with guest authors and critics. As a teacher, my efforts will become more efficient as I can project anything I create on my computer: character charts, vocabulary quizzes, or essential questions without worrying whether it's a bright afternoon and the sunlight through curtain-less windows will make the overhead useless. I won't have to kill as many trees making handouts of everything, either.

Ultimately, as a teacher, I am trying to engage creative 21st century students in literature and universal ideas and issues that human culture has engaged in for millennia.
