My Students

Do you remember what it was like to have your teacher assign you reading that was of absolute, no interest to you? Many of my students have had this same experience, and I want to give them the chance to read literature that interests them and encourages them to continue reading.

My students are seventh graders from a rural county in North Carolina.

I have learned that many of them have not had positive experiences with literature when they come to me, and one of my main goals over the course of each school year is to change their perception of reading. Many do not realize that books can take them to wonderful and unusual worlds. The students that I teach are very intelligent, and need an opportunity to further their learning through reading material that interests them. This is why Sharon Draper's book "Forged by Fire," would be so wonderful for them. Although my students are very intelligent, many of them come from homes that are poverty stricken and do not have a large source of reading material. Not only do Sharon Draper's books engage the students, but they are also able to connect with the characters, as many of them come from the same type of home environments as the students in my classroom.

My Project

"Forged by Fire," is the second in a series of books entitled "The Hazelwood High Trilogy." Last year, I read the first book of the series with my students and they fell in love with it. This year I would like to extend that experience and read "Forged by Fire." My students are able to connect with the characters from this trilogy because many of the characters are like them. I feel that it is important to make literature relevant to students as a way to inspire them to continue reading. Through this book, my students are going to extend their technology skills and create a glog about a character of their choice. This will teach the students about character traits and how to describe a person using new vocabulary. Not only will this enrich the learning experiences of my students this year, but for years to come, as this is a set of books that I will continue to use every year.

As I stated early, I believe that it is important to make literature relevant to each and every student, and this project will allow me to do that.

My goal is that this project spark a love of reading within each and every student, as a way for them to continue to grow as learners. Please help to fulfill this project!
