Building Creative Minds with Architecture and Sculpture

My students need various art materials for creating sculpture and architecture projects. They need wire, foam board, modeling clay, and wood pieces to make creative work.

My Students

Every Friday I have an art club for students that crave extra art time. My room is filled with students, many of them are boys who love to build and sculpted out of anything they can find, but not nice sculpting materials. They always ask me “Ms. K when are you going to get new stuff to build with?"

I am currently teaching K-8 art in Ohio.

My school is designed for the specialized instruction for children with ADD, ADHD, Asperger’s disorder, and Autism. Our students are also 95% poverty. As the art instructor, I am responsible for designing the art curriculum to meet ODE, State Fine Art Standards. Unfortunately my school very poorly funded, especially in the arts. My students find art to be very therapeutic and they deserve various creative materials to express themselves. Our school is in an economically depressed area, which was built in the 1920’s without the benefit of modern ergonomics. My students find joy in creating beautiful colorful sculptures that adds life to our dull school building.

My Project

With various sculpture materials, like foam board, craving Styrofoam, wire, and wood pieces the students will be motivated to create expressive artworks that represent there culture, community, and lives through architecture. It’s incredible how the act of creating an inspiring artwork can do to for their confidence and self-esteem.

Pablo Picasso once said “The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place; from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a passing shape, from a spider’s web”.

My students take inspiration from all around them and they love to create artworks from their experiences and struggles in life. They deserve the materials and resources express their creativity and grow through the use of the donated materials.
