Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We have so many great books! If only we had the materials to set up an efficient way for the students to check out books! File folders, library pockets and cards, and labels will make it easy for students to locate and check out books from our classroom library.

My 3rd graders are GREAT!

Our school is in an urban area of Illinois. My students and their families come from Mexico, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Spanish is their first language, and they are learning English at school. Their parents work long hours, leaving little time to take their children to explore the city, suburbs, state, or countryside. Most of them rarely leave their immediate neighborhood, so reading opens a window into the world outside of their neighborhood. Through reading, they learn about History, people, and other cultures.

My Project

We have so many great books in our classroom library, but we need a better way for the students to borrow them. Each student will be given their own file folder to use to check out and log books. The inside of each file folder will have a library pocket adhered to the left side and reading log sheets on the right side. In order to check out a book, students will write their name on the library book card and insert it into the pocket in their folder. They will write the title of the book and the date on their reading log sheet. These folders will be stored on a table next to the classroom library. The labels will be used to label the book bins by genre. By implementing these simple materials in our classroom, students will learn organizational skills, be able to easily track the books that they have read, and help to maintain an orderly library area. It will also help me hold students accountable for returning the books that they borrow.

Your support of this project will help my students to check out library books from the classroom library in a simple and easily understood way.

The materials will also help me to keep track of our books and organize them in a student-friendly way.
