Innocent Until Proven Guilty: The Big Bad Wolf

My Students

Who's afraid of the big bad wolf? Like many, my students have probably heard the version of "The Three Little Pigs" where the wolf huffed and puffed until he blew their house down. By reading a different version of the events, my students will learn that there's always two sides to every story.

My students are highly motivated learners.

They want to stump you with their questions and impress you with their answers. They work on an accelerated curriculum in both reading and math. Our school is a single hallway of classrooms where the children are constantly trying to stretch their imaginations and their voices.

My Project

The classroom set of "The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs" will introduce students to a different and witty version of the original. The students will comb through the book seeking clues to build a case for or against the Big Bad Wolf. It will bring new meaning to the phrase "use evidence in the text to support your statement". The students will then play out the roles of judge, jury, lawyer, and defendant as they conduct a mock trial of The People vs. The Big Bad Wolf. The students will learn courtroom jargon and familiarize themselves with the basic procedures of a real life courtroom. It will be a hands-on lesson of democracy in action. The book will serve as a continual resource reinforcing literacy skills like characterization as students take on their different roles. Students will use the book to explore and analyze the various viewpoints of the story to decide whether the Big Bad Wolf is indeed bad or really just a wolf that got a bad rap.

Someone once said, "a mind once stretched by a new idea never regains its original dimensions".

I hope this project will help students stretch their minds and stay open to differing viewpoints that can spark debate and rich discussion. This project is a fun and creative way for students to step outside the box.
