My Students

Did you know that there are 27 million people living in modern day slavery around the world? Also, that 80% of the transnational victims of human trafficking are women and children? My students hope to create a powerful, web based, multimedia project in order to bring awareness to this issue.

At Hillside New Tech, students learn using a Project Based Learning curriculum.

21st Century Skills such as collaboration, oral communication and work ethic are heavily stressed. The student demographic is defined as low SES or high needs in a city where gang violence, and teen pregnancy are prevalent. These students challenge themselves daily to defy stereotypes about their community by creating engaging, real life projects which incorporate technology.

My Project

The book "Half the Sky" will expose students to candid and life changing stories about the plight of women around the world that are victims of human trafficking. Many students live in communities where it is rare to know someone that has traveled to many other countries or has in-depth knowledge of such international issues. This book will expose students to global women's rights issues and hopefully allow them to draw parallels between many of these communities and their own.

This project is so important because it will teach my students advocacy strategies.

I am convinced that by using compassion and advocating for a cause "half the sky away", my students will be better able to identify, and move to action on issues with in their own community.
