My Students

Wouldn't you expect your child to have a planner when entering 6th grade? Due to funding cuts, our building is unable to provide planners for our students as we have in the past. The teachers use these with the students as an organizational tool and for communication between parent and teacher.

My students come from varying backgrounds.

Nearly 80% are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Most come from lower income families. The students attend school in Michigan where our enrollment has declined due to the economy. Many of our parents have lost their jobs and are struggling to make ends meet. However, most of my students want to succeed and perform well in school. Many participate in after school activities if they have transportation. They like to socialize with each other and like to have fun learning.

My Project

Our sixth grade students will be using the leftover planners from last year. The planners are undated so we are lucky that we can still use them. However, we are short approximately 75. These planners will be used by the students to write down each day's lesson/assignment for each class. This will help them to stay organized so that at the of the day they will look in their planner while at their locker to take home what they need to for the next day. In addition, the planners are shared with their parents so that they know what their child is doing in school and if they have homework to complete. Lastly, the planners are used as a communication tool between school and home.

This project will make a difference for our students all year long and not just for my class, but all of their classes.

Each 6th grade teacher is very consistent about teaching the students to use the planners as a tool. My students will learn organizational skills and learn to prepare for each of their class subjects that will carry over with them through high school.
