My Students

The Albert Einstein quote posted on our classroom wall states, "The mind that has been stretched will never return to its original dimension." The readers in the Academically and Intellectually Gifted classroom at my school need more texts of different genres to stretch their minds.

I teach reading and math to advanced readers and mathematicians at a large, rural elementary school in North Carolina.

The student groups for which I am requesting materials in this project are my fourth grade readers and fifth grade readers. I am fortunate to teach strong readers who already have a love of literature. Many of them, however, favor a specific genre or type of book. My goal is to introduce them to many types of literature while also challenging them with texts at their higher level of reading and teaching them more about the elements of literature. At an elementary school, it is hard to provide literature of various genres and at a high enough level to meet the meets of advanced reading students.

My Project

This project requests 14 copies of D'aulaires' Book of Greek Myths. It is an appropriate text for my students because it is on a challenging reading level but is still appropriate for children ages 9-11. They will be introduced to gods, goddesses, and legendary figures from ancient myths that have inspired literature and art through the ages. I think that the book will be wonderful for read aloud, shared reading, and also individual student "expert projects" based on a particular myth, character, or aspect of Greek literature and/or culture. While the classic stories promise to intrigue all of my reading students, I believe they will be of interest especially to boys who can sometimes be less avid readers. We also need just three more copies of American Tall Tales so each student can read tales that reflect American heritage and lend themselves to reading instruction about figurative language such as exaggeration, similes, metaphors, personification, and other literary elements.

It is often said that gifted learners "will be fine" with the instructional materials they have because they are already proficient at grade level tasks.

However, I must advocate for them to obtain reading materials that will help them grow to meet their learning potential. They truly are the future leaders of our nation, and I appreciate the support from donors who can help to challenge and stretch advanced reading students' minds with the literature requested by this project proposal.
