My Students

I am in a great classroom with all the bells and whistles when it comes to technology. However, being a new unit due to a population increase, supplies, such as a classroom library and dictionaries, do not exist. Building a strong vocabulary is critical to a child's success in school and in life.

My students are from an urban location in Southwest Florida.

Almost 95% of this public school population is on free and reduced lunch. They come from very poor families and many live in community shelters. The parents want to provide and value education, but are unable to due to financial constraints. However, the children love to read and learn.

My Project

The Internet is becoming a prominent source for information nowadays. It is likely that a majority of households no longer have dictionaries and thesauruses because it is so easy to access these tools online. However, it is important for children to learn how to properly use a dictionary to attain the proper spelling and accurate definitions of words. Because dictionaries in homes are not as common as they once were, a teacher must start with the basics when it comes to teaching children proper dictionary use.

By funding this project, you will provide an opportunity for children to grow and learn alongside their more affluent peers and give them a better chance in life and in school.
