Competitve Speech Equals Critical Thinking

My students need 21 current event resources that they can understand when they read it and prepare for competitive speech contests.

My Students

Do you remember your first serious speech? I do. It was at a competitive speech contest and I won 3rd! I'll never forget the confidence it gave me to try other performance skills. Students can feel the way I do if they know what their speech is about and they need solid resources to do so.

The middle school contest team is comprised of 7th and 8th graders who give up their Saturdays to get on a school bus at 5:30 a.m.

to take risks. Just by showing up, they have gained confidence. My students are middle-class mostly from broken homes and do not have alot of luxuries. These trips show them the state as they mingle with students from all over. Our school strongly supports this program because it is an activity that ALL students can attempt.

My Project

Speech contests require memorized speeches, current event information for extemporaneous speeches, poetry, prose, debate statistics. Weekly Reader is a wonderful source for this age group because they can read it and understand it. Then, we can build a conversation around what they read and use what they learn to cement their skills. Winning is, of course, a great motivator. However, it is in the journey of discovering their talents that they learn responsibility, discipline, and team ideals.

My principal's enthusiasm for the program has reverberated with the kids.

They know that we have a wonderful chance of building a special program that all students can do, even some special needs students. Current event resources contribute to more than this. They prepare the students to understand their other subjects better and tie in the past with the present. I am passionate about my students being critical thinkers who are not easily led astray by wacko thinking. I want them to think.
