My Students

Our society is plagued with obesity and my students are not exempt. With these pedometers I can teach them that simply walking can improve their health and their lives. I think it is sad that my students life expectancy is less than my generations.

I work in a rural community with a large migrate population as well as over 50% of my students being provided free and reduced lunch.

There are over 700 students in my middle school and some of them are only exposed to proper nutrition and exercise at school. The community surrounding my school is a farming community with a few plants. As their physical education teacher I feel it is my obligation to provide them with the knowledge of how to take care of their bodies with little or no cost. Over the years I have found that most of my students who are from 11-14 have never done an aerobic video or walked on a treadmill.

My Project

With these pedometers I will be able to provide the knowledge of how just walking can burn calories and is great physical activity. In middle school some students who are not as athletic as others do not engage in the physical activity their bodies need. I will be using these pedometers to teach a cross curriculum lesson, we will be choosing a place on the other side of North Carolina and walking to our destination. We will determine how many steps are in a mile and once we have chosen our destination we will calculate the number of miles into steps. There will be a map of North Carolina on the wall and we will track our progress daily, color coding each class since there are 12 different classes. Once we have reached our destination we will celebrate by having a snack of origin to that particular region of North Carolina. This is a non-threatening manner of involving any student no matter their physical ability level to be involved in the lesson and most of all physical activity.

This project will make a difference in students lives because they will be learning a skill that can be applied to their lives now and in future years.

My schools young population is grossly overweight and this is one way I can encourage all students to be involved in physical activity. I can also add other curriculum's into my lesson to make it a school wide event. This project is not just for a few students at my school it is for all of the students at my school.
