My Students

What does it take to make reading into an adventure? The right books of course! We need new class sets of novels because the old sets are incomplete, outdated, and no longer relevant to today's generation. By reading interesting texts, our students will see that reading opens new worlds.

I teach 7th grade Language Arts at a school on a military base in southern Arizona.

Since my students are the children of the American military, it is imperative that school becomes a place of safety, security, and understanding. Since these kids are connected to the military, their lives are significantly different from most other American children. Frequently uprooted due to moves and often separated from their parents due to deployments, these students need to find ways to escape from the harsh realities of their lives. For many of these students, reading can be a positive way for them to branch away from their troubles. I am asking for support to provide these class sets for my students, because, like most of America, our school is feeling the pinch. All of our novel sets are old and outdated, but we simply do not have enough money to provide updated materials at this time. Instead, I request support from the others who care to help me provide the best education possible.

My Project

Students need access to a variety of genres, so this proposal has a little something for everyone! First off, is an oldie but a goody. It is indisputable that any classic author can effectively use satire and wit quite like America's beloved Mark Twain. The second selection, Nothing but the Truth, is a modern documentary by Avi, of a 9th grade boy who challenges the idea of “truth” as most people see it. This book as well as Johnson's book Who Moved the Cheese For Teens, will be a hit with middle school students who are constantly looking at the issue of fairness and roles within society. I have also requested an extra 15 copies of Lois Lowry's novel, The Giver, another book encouraging students to question what really makes a "perfect" society. Finally, I have included an adaptation of Greg Mortenson's novel, Three Cups of Tea, which provides a young adult perspective of life and culture in the progress of Afghanistan and the Middle East.

Many of my students are reluctant readers, and traditional class literature just does not hold their interest.

By selecting class reading selections that are interesting and relevant to people their age, I will be able to prove the merit of reading to a generation that is more comfortable behind a computer than behind a book.
